John Abendschan
Campus and Men's Coordinator
John Abendschan brings 17 years of experience and is currently the campus Athletic Coordinator for Boswell High School. Coach Abendschan is in his ninth season as the Head Football Coach at Boswell High School. His teams have made the playoffs for seven of his eight years as the head coach. Last season, his Pioneers beat Rider in the first round and lost to eventual State Champions Aledo. In 2012, the Pioneers lost to Lake Dallas in the first round. Coach Abendschan was honored by being named the Head Coach of the West Squad in the DFW All Star Game. John was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. His father is in the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame as a guard and kicker with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Coach Abendschan grew up in Abilene and graduated from Abilene Cooper High School in 1992. He attended Eastern New Mexico for three semesters competing in football for two seasons, redshirting his freshman year and captain the next season. John then transfered to Texas Tech University to walk on for Spike Dykes and be a Red Raider. He sat out the 1994 season, but played the 1995 season. They played the Air Force in the Copper Bowl that year. He played defensive tackle for the Red Raiders football team. In 1996, he earned a football scholarship and a starting spot. He lead the defensive tackles in tackles that season. John played for Dean Slayton, long time Tech assisant coach, and played in the Alamo Bowl agaiinst Iowa. He graduated in the spring of 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in Math from Texas Tech University. Prior to arriving at Boswell High School, John coached the offensive line at South Grand Prairie High School in 2001-2002. He coached on the state championship staff at Flower Mound Marcus High School (1997-1999). He also coached the offensive line at Flower Mound High School and was the offensive and defensive line coach at South Grand Prairie. In addition to his coaching privileges, he was honored in Who's Who among American Teachers and named the 1997 Salley May First Year Teacher of the Year for Lewisville ISD. He belongs to the Texas High School Coaches Association and Coaches Outreach. Coach Abendschan and his wife of 16 years, Sherry, are proud parents of three daughters - Zoe (11), Ali (8), and Lily (5).
