Boswell sophomore Andrea Acuna competed in the 5A Cross Country State Championships on November 4 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Despite a hip injury that kept her from practicing in the two weeks before the State meet, she placed in the top third of the 150 competitors.
"She ran a 19:32, which is far from her best, but I was just happy she finished with no major problems," coach Andy Acuna said. "I was proud of how she was able to gut one more race out for the season. She will now recover from her injury after she sees a doctor tomorrow, and then we will get ready for track season."
Andrea and seven of her teammates competed in the Regional Cross Country Meet on October 23 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. The girls team fell just short of qualifying for State coming in sixth place out of 24 teams. However, Andrea qualified as an individual taking ninth place overall out of 185 athletes with a time of 18:15.
"She injured her hip in a workout three days after the regional meet," coach Acuna said. "Three days before the state meet, I almost pulled her from the race because she tried to jog a mile, and it hurt. She begged to run in the meet though, so I went ahead and let her. We expect her to make it to State next year, injury free, and finish in the top 10."
